Collection Historical Note

The Minneapolis Steel & Machinery Company (MS&M Co.) was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by J. L. Record and Otis Briggs on April 24, 1902, to manufacture steelcomponents for buildings, bridges, and other steel structures. They entered the tractor business in 1910 when the Joy-Wilson Company of Minneapolis was hired to design a tractor for them. This machine became the Twin City 40, and the company subsequently built tractors on subcontract for Case Threshing Machine Company and Bull Tractor Company. A line of smaller tractors followed in the 1910s, and the company also developed a line of gas engines, also using the Twin City trade name. Minneapolis Steel and Machinery merged with Moline Implement Company and Minneapolis Threshing Machine Company on March 30, 1929 to form the Minneapolis-Moline Power Implement Company (Collection 1776).
