Diamond Iron Works (1880-c. 1970) | Historical Construction Equipment Association

Name: Diamond Iron Works (1880-c. 1970)

Historical Note:

Diamond Iron Works was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1880 (per sales literature) or 1885 as a repair shop for a sawmill operated by a Mr. Smith and Mr. Richardson. It produced sawmill, flour mill, woodworking and elevator machinery. It also produced the Diamond Junior wheel tractor circa 1900,  gas engines – the American, introduced in 1912, and the William A. Sorg oil-gas engine, starting in 1913 – and stationary power units. Diamond Iron Works assembled at least two lines of tractors on contract: for Transit Thresher Company, for 26 machines in 1906 and 1907, and tiller wheel crawler tractors for The Holt Manufacturing Company (Collection 2207), from parts shipped from Holt in Stockton, California, starting in May, 1909. Crushing equipment was also manufactured, and the records in this collection discuss that product line exclusively; in its literature, Diamond claims to be the first successful American manufacturer of roller bearing crushers.

Mahr Manufacturing Company was operated as a division from at least 1937 through August, 1953, and sales literature printed from 1937 through 1940 bears both names. A cover letter dated 1953 has a Diamahr logo.

Eagle Crusher Company acquired the former Austin-Western (Collection 10) line of crushing equipment from Clark Equipment Company (Collection 252) and Diamond Iron Works (Collection 1694) in the 1970s.
