W. A. Riddell Company (?-1957) | Historical Construction Equipment Association

Name: W. A. Riddell Company (?-1957)
Variant Name: Warco

Historical Note:

American Clay Company (Collection 2374), also known as or dba The American Clay Machinery Company, was based in Bucyrus, Ohio. Its steam shovel line was acquired by Victor R. Browning Company (Collection 3) and, according to retiree Bill Morgan, the company itself was acquired by W. A. Riddell Company – WARCO (Collection 1809).

The Hadfield-Penfield Steel Company (Collection 1727) was based in Bucyrus, Ohio. The W. A. Riddell Company (Collection 1809) stated beginning in 1928 that it was the successor to Hadfield-Penfield. This evidently occurred in 1927 or 1928.

The Hercules Company (Collection 1732), a subsidiary of The Osgood Company, was based in Marion, Ohio. It is known to have been in operation from 1930 through 1932, and ceased operations by October 2009. Nothing else is known of their history; it may have been purchased by W. A. Riddell Company (Collection 1809), as Warco introduced a Hercules brand of three-wheel roller by 1947.

Huber Manufacturing Company (Collection 425) acquired W. A. Riddell in 1957 to form Huber-Warco Company.
