Rome Manufacturing Company (1925-1951) | Historical Construction Equipment Association

Name: Rome Manufacturing Company (1925-1951)
Variant Name: Rome Grader Division of Utica Fork and Hoe; Rome Grader & Machinery.

Historical Note:

Founded in 1925 in Rome, New York as the Rome Grader Division of Utica Fork and Hoe, Rome Manufacturing Company initially produced pull graders. The graders were initially a product of its Locomotive Division then, sometime starting in the 1930s, the Grader Department. It introduced a motor grader conversion of an industrial wheel tractor in 1930, then went on to produce full motor graders. The company eventually became Rome Grader & Machinery.

Rome was acquired as a division of Revere Copper & Brass, evidently in the 1930s, then by Pettibone-Mulliken Corporation (Collection 1177) in 1951 as its Pettibone New York Division. Pettibone New York produced motor graders and self-propelled hydraulic cranes. (The Bartell Machinery Systems unit of Pettibone LLC is also based in Rome, but there is no known connection.)

Rome Manufacturing Company is not to be confused with Rome Plow Company (later Rome Industries, then Rome Plow Equipment Company LLC, Collection 2562), a manufacturer of tractor attachments and allied equipment for Caterpillar products based in Cedartown, Georgia.
