Russell Grader Manufacturing Company (1903-1928) | Historical Construction Equipment Association

Name: Russell Grader Manufacturing Company (1903-1928)

Historical Note:

Russell Grader Manufacturing Company was founded in 1903 by Richard Russell in Stephen, Minnesota. Elevating graders and an unsuccessful gas engine were the first products. The company relocated to Hamline, Minnesota, in 1906, and began manufacturing pull graders in 1908 with the introduction of a two-horse patrol machine. Russell sales literature claims that they produced the “first patrol grader on the market”; it may have been this machine.

Russell also claimed to have produced the first self-contained portable jaw crusher plant, and B. W. and Leo Harris Company Manufacturers of Minneapolis, Minnesota, apparently produced road drags for Russell.

Russell Grader Manufacturing Company was acquired by Caterpillar Tractor Company (Collection 228) in 1928, and graders were Cat’s first product outside of crawler tractors.

The Russell & Company (Collection 1284) of Massillon, Ohio, was founded in 1842 by Charles M. Russell. It is not to be confused with Russell Grader Manufacturing Company (Collection 506), nor is Mr. Russell to be confused with William S. Russell, general manager of the Ohio Steam Shovel Company (Collection 2934) in Toledo, Ohio in 1903 and holder of several patents for railroad and steam shovels.
